10 years of placement experience. Here's what we've learned about AAA — the only carrier in our portfolio that bundles world-class insurance with a membership program that keeps delivering value every single day.
AAA — the American Automobile Association — was founded in 1902, making it one of the oldest member organizations in the United States. Today AAA serves more than 65 million members across North America through a federation of regional clubs. In Minnesota, the relevant club is AAA Minneapolis/St. Paul, part of The Auto Club Group — the second-largest AAA club in the country, serving more than 14 million members across 14 states.
AAA is not a traditional insurance company. It is a safety and membership-based organization whose mission extends well beyond insurance — roadside assistance, travel planning, member discounts, and advocacy have been central to AAA's identity for over 120 years. That mission carries over into their insurance products. When you buy insurance through AAA, you are also joining a membership organization that delivers tangible value every day, not just at claim time.
We have placed clients with AAA for 10 years across personal auto, home, and umbrella. AAA ranks #1 for home and auto bundling in Minnesota according to MoneyGeek's 2026 analysis, with a score of 96 out of 100 and the lowest average bundle premium in the state at $2,781 per year. Their insurance is available exclusively to AAA members — the membership fee is the cost of entry, and in our experience it pays for itself quickly.
After 10 years of placement, here's what consistently stands out — grounded in real client outcomes, not carrier marketing copy.
According to MoneyGeek's 2026 analysis, AAA is the top-rated home and auto bundle provider in Minnesota — a score of 96 out of 100, the lowest average annual bundle premium in the state at $2,781, and first-place rankings in both auto and home affordability among Minnesota bundle providers. For clients looking to consolidate and save, AAA is the first call we make.
AAA Plus membership includes towing up to 100 miles, fuel delivery, flat tire service, battery jump-start and replacement, vehicle lockout service up to $100, and a second truck for extricating and winching. This isn't a policy add-on with a deductible — it's a membership benefit that works independently of your insurance policy. Classic membership includes more limited roadside coverage; most clients we place opt for Plus or Premier. For clients who travel or drive older vehicles, the upgrade pays for itself quickly.
In our experience, AAA's local claims presence is a genuine differentiator. They are fair in their settlements, good communicators, and — importantly — they loop in our agency when something needs to move forward. That gives our clients two advocates at claim time: Options Insurance and AAA's local leadership, both working toward the same outcome. That's rare and it matters when a claim gets complicated.
AAA's travel agents are a benefit most clients don't discover until after they join. AAA travel agents can help plan domestic and international trips — hotels, cruises, tours, car rentals — and the service is included in membership. International Driving Permits, passport photos (up to 2 sets per year), and exclusive hotel and rental car discounts round out a travel package that no insurance carrier in our portfolio can match.
AAA membership delivers value every single day, not just at claim time. Members receive exclusive discounts on shopping, dining, and entertainment, plus savings on hotels and car rentals. Identity theft monitoring is included (enrollment required). For families that travel or make regular retail purchases, the membership pays for itself — and the insurance is on top of that.
AAA offers a disappearing deductible that reduces $50 every claim-free term, up to a $500 maximum reduction. Claim Free Rewards prevents premium increases for claims under $250. Equipment breakdown coverage and service line protection are available as endorsements. For the suburban household that accumulates assets over time, AAA's product menu scales with them.
AAA insurance is only available to members. Here's what that membership delivers — every day, not just when you have a claim.
Roadside benefits listed reflect AAA Plus membership. Classic membership includes more limited roadside coverage. AAA insurance is available exclusively to AAA members — membership must be active to maintain coverage. Contact Options Insurance to bundle your membership with your policy.
No carrier is perfect. These are areas where, in our experience and based on third-party data, AAA has room to improve.
AAA is currently in the process of a technology platform migration, converting customers from older policy systems to a new platform. In our experience, this transition has created some friction for clients being converted — billing changes, login updates, and communication gaps. It's a temporary issue, not a structural one, and AAA is actively working through it. We flag it honestly because clients should know to call us if something looks off during renewal.
AAA's maximum loss assessment coverage may be less than what current Minnesota association master policies require. Condo and townhome association deductibles have increased significantly in recent years — in some cases to $25,000 or more — and AAA's standard loss assessment limits don't always keep pace. We review this carefully for every condo and townhome client before placing with AAA.
AAA's personal umbrella policy does not currently offer uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. For clients who want a true excess UM/UIM layer on top of their auto policy — particularly important in Minnesota where uninsured drivers are a real exposure — we may need to look at other carriers for the umbrella or supplement accordingly.
AAA's roof coverage is not as broad as some other carriers in our portfolio. For clients with older roofs, or those who want replacement cost coverage regardless of roof age, we may find better options elsewhere. Minnesota's hail and storm exposure makes roof coverage a particularly important line item to evaluate carefully.
After placing hundreds of clients with AAA, here's an honest picture of who thrives with them and who we typically steer elsewhere.
If you're deciding between AAA and the two most common captive alternatives in Minnesota, here's what the public data shows. We don't represent State Farm or Allstate, so this is based entirely on third-party data — not our placement experience.
